‘I, Alex Cross’ films at Stan Hywet, Glendale
Film crews have been working their way through Akron locations including Stan Hywet Hall and Glendale Cemetery for a new Hollywood movie. The cemetery will be closed to the public today while the movie is being made. The film, I, Alex Cross, is based on a novel by James Patterson, one of a series focusing on the detective Alex Cross. Morgan Freeman played Cross in the big-screen films Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider. Tyler Perry takes over as Cross in the latest production, large portions of which have also been shot in Cleveland. The local sites have some special challenges. Stan Hywet is, of course, a historic location, renowned for its architecture and gardens. Glendale also has a noteworthy history, having opened in 1839, and remains an operating cemetery.Steven Kaut, chief operating officer at Glendale, said the film company “has been extremely cooperative. They understood that this is different from any other type of venue.”Glendale representatives have been on hand to protect the cemetery — for example by making sure that film trucks and tents are set up only in areas where there are no burials — and will be supervising again today, Kaut said. Both the Stan Hywet and Glendale locations have been closed sets, with no media admitted. The insistence on privacy seemed to intensify after news broke that Matthew Fox, the Lost star who is also in I, Alex Cross, had been accused of assaulting a bus driver in Cleveland early Sunday morning. According to the Plain Dealer, the driver said she was attacked by Fox after she refused to let him on a bus reserved for a private party.Even as I, Alex Cross has been shooting, another, independent film has been in production in Northeast Ohio, including Medina and other locations.Kandie Land, a horror movie by Don Kilrain and Eddie Lengyel, shot scenes in Lafayette Township on Tuesday. Kilrain and Lengyel’s previous productions include The Melon Heads, Voodoo Rising and Murder Machine! Kandie Land involves a group of models on a photo shoot at an eerie location where gore ensues.Rich Heldenfels writes about popular culture for the Beacon Journal and in the HeldenFiles Online blog at http://heldenfels.ohio.com and on Facebook and on Twitter.
